CUISINE: Arabic
An incredibly tempting dish of slow-cooked beef in a rich tomato sauce, topped with yogurt, nuts, and dried fruit, inspired by my visit to Abu Dhabi. Colorful beef chunks full of aromatic spices.
Ingredients:
- 400 g beef, cut into chunks
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 400 g tomatoes (fresh or canned)
- 3 tbsp yogurt
- 3 tbsp walnuts, chopped
- 2 tbsp almonds or pistachios, toasted
- 2 tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2–3 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp dried fruit (such as dried apricots, dates, or cranberries) – for decoration only
Preparation:
- Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
- Add the onion and sauté until translucent (about 5–7 minutes).
- Add garlic and spices (turmeric, cinnamon, cumin) and sauté for another minute.
- Add the beef chunks and sear briefly on all sides until lightly browned.
- Add tomatoes, stir, and cover.
- Transfer to an oven preheated to 180°C (356°F) and bake for 1–1.5 hours, until the beef is tender.
- Before serving, drizzle with yogurt and sprinkle with toasted walnuts, almonds, or pistachios.
- Decorate with dried fruit (like cranberries, apricots, or dates) for a colorful and flavorful finishing touch.
- Serve with fresh bread or rice.
