Homemade Condensed Milk
Introduction:
Condensed milk is thick, creamy, and sweet – perfect for desserts, coffee, or various recipes.
Making it at home is simple, using only two ingredients and a basic technique.
The key is to evaporate the water from the milk while sweetening it, achieving the characteristic thick and creamy consistency.
Ingredients
- 500 ml milk (3.2% fat recommended for best results)
- 200 g granulated sugar

Instructions
- In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine milk and sugar to distribute heat evenly and prevent scorching.
- Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar fully dissolves.
- Increase heat slightly to bring to a gentle simmer, avoiding vigorous boiling.
- Reduce heat to maintain a gentle simmer, cook uncovered, stirring occasionally. The mixture will thicken gradually, about 35 minutes depending on desired consistency.
- Test by dropping a small amount on a chilled plate – if it thickens like condensed milk, it’s ready.
- Remove from heat and let cool completely; it will thicken further.
- Transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

TIP:
Milk with higher fat content produces creamier condensed milk. Stirring occasionally prevents sticking and burning.
