Directions

Soft and fluffy vanilla cream rolls, topped with a slice of orange and decorated with almond flakes. These aromatic rolls are simple to make at home with basic ingredients, yet they look unique and irresistible.
Brush them with a little melted butter straight from the oven and enjoy them warm – they melt in your mouth, and one batch is never enough!
They rise twice for perfect volume and can be stored in the fridge for several days, making them ideal for snacks, breakfast, or dessert.
Ingredients
For the dough:
- 200 g flour
- 130 ml warm milk
- 4 g dry yeast
- 3 tbsp honey or 2 tbsp sugar
- 35 g butter (room temperature)
- 1/2 tsp salt
For the vanilla cream:
- 3 egg yolks (≈55 g)
- 250 ml milk
- 25 g starch (1 heaping tablespoon)
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp vanilla extract
For decoration:
- 5 thin orange slices (peeled)
- Almond flakes
- Poppy seeds (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the dough
- Mix warm milk with yeast and sweetener (honey or sugar) until dissolved.
- Add flour and salt, knead briefly, then add softened butter.
- Knead for 5–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Brush with oil, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise until doubled in size.
2. Make the vanilla cream
- Whisk egg yolks with milk and starch.
- Add sugar and vanilla, mix until smooth.
- Heat gently over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened.
- Cover with plastic wrap and let cool completely.
3. Prepare the rolls
- Cut dough into 5 thin discs (6–7 cm) as bases for the rolls.
- Roll the remaining dough into 5 ropes, about 40 cm each.
- Spread cooled cream on the bases, leaving 1 cm from the edges.
- Wrap the dough ropes around the cream, leaving the center open.
- Add remaining cream on top and cover each roll with a slice of orange.
4. Bake
- Let the rolls rise again until nearly doubled.
- Brush with egg mixed with milk.
- Sprinkle almond flakes and poppy seeds.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 170°C for 15 minutes, until golden.
5. Serve
Brush with melted butter and enjoy warm. Store leftovers in the fridge for a snack or breakfast.
Tip: Make sure the cream is fully cooled before assembling the rolls for a smooth, creamy filling.
