Visual Guide: How to Clean and Prepare Fresh Mussels
🍽️ 1. Buying and Storing
Buy mussels fresh, just before cooking, and store them in the fridge covered with a damp cloth (not in a sealed container).
🌊 2. Soaking in Salt Water
Soak the mussels in cold water with 1 tablespoon of sea salt per 1 liter of water.
⏱️ Leave them for 15–30 minutes to help expel any sand inside.
🧼 3. External Cleaning
Using a brush, sponge, or wire scrubber:
🫧 Scrub each mussel to remove external dirt.
✂️ Remove the “beard” (fibrous string) gently by pulling it with your hand or cutting it off with scissors.
⚠️ 4. Sorting
🚮 Discard:
- Broken shells
- Open mussels that do not close when tapped

✅ Keep:
- Fully closed mussels
- Open mussels that close when tapped

🚿 5. Final Rinse
Before cooking, rinse all mussels under cold water and drain them well.
🍳 They’re now ready to cook in your favorite sauces!
